Club Advisors: Ms. Marlo Matin and Ms. Meagyn Karmakar

The National Honor Society elevates a school’s commitment to the values of scholarship, service, leadership, and character. These four pillars have been associated with membership in the organization since its inception in 1921. Chapter membership not only recognizes students for their accomplishments, but challenges them to develop further through active involvement in school activities and community service.

Is there a difference between Service Hours and Service Projects?
Yes. Service hours are completely independent from the service project. Members must complete 20 service hours each year AND 1 service project per semester.

How many service hours do I need to complete?
New and returning members must complete 20 hours by September 21, 2019. New members may count any volunteer activities from January 2019 - September 21, 2020. Returning Members may count any service hours from August 29, 2018 - September 21, 2019 that was not included in your previous application.

How many hours may I get credit for when participating in Outdoor School or other camp programs and
You may count 6 hours for each week long volunteer experience.

How many service projects do I need to complete?
You must complete 1 service project with a designated NHS board member or through the WLHS tutoring center each semester. Semester 1 projects must be completed by January 31, 2020. Semester 2 projects must be completed by April 30, 2020.

Where can I find out about NHS Service Projects?
NHS Service projects are announced at monthly meetings, via Facebook and here on the website at the top of the page. Please be aware that there are a limited (but plenty enough) number of projects per year. Only so many people can participate in each project, generally around twenty. Toward the end of each semester, the projects fill up quickly. the sooner you sign up for one, the better.

Can I get excused from a Service Project because I am involved in sports/music/etc?
No, there will be no excuses issued. You need to prioritize and plan ahead. You are expected to complete, at minimum, one service project per semester. Members have and continue to successfully balance their activities and National Honor Society; there will be no exceptions.

How many absences can I have?
You cannot have any unexcused absences from meetings. If you have an unexcused absence, you must complete a service project to make up for the meeting. You are only allowed to do this once a semester. A second unexcused absence will result in removal from the club.

Does my school attendance affect my acceptance to and status in NHS?
Yes. Your school attendance must be good. Students that are on the chronically absent list will first receive a warning that their attendance is below standards. Appearing on the chronically absent list a second time may result in removal from NHS.

What if I miss a meeting?
Bring a hard copy of your School Master attendance to one of your advisors. Ask one of the officers or another member about information you may have missed. Check the website. Do not ask one of the advisors to review all the information you missed.

When are meetings?
The usual meeting time is every second Tuesday of the month at lunch in the AUX gym. May's meeting is the only exception and is held the first Tuesday of the month.

What if I have a test to make up during one of the meetings?
Reschedule it! Reschedule to make up your test another day; these meetings provide very important information about being a member of the National Honor Society and should not be missed.

How will I know if I have been accepted into NHS?
The NHS acceptance list will be posted on Marlo Matin's (E102) and Meagyn Karmakar's (E105) classroom doors by October 4, 2019. Please plan on attending the first required meeting for new and returning members on October 8, 2019.

What if I have a question?
Read all the Frequently Asked Questions to make sure your question has not already been answered. If you still have a question or concern, please contact one of the advisors.
